Are Texas liquor stores open on New Year’s Day? What the law says

Besides Sundays, there are only three days a year when liquor stores close– and one of those days is the first day of the new year.

New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, Jan. 1 this year.

For those who need to refresh their beverage closet after closing out the new year, you’ll have to wait until Jan. 2 because of Texas Alcoholic and Beverage Consumption laws.

What Texas law says about holiday liquor store hours

According to Texas law, liquor stores are closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

If Christmas Day or New Year’s Day happen to fall on a Sunday, they remain closed the following Monday.

Grocery stores can legally sell beer and wine on Sundays and holidays. However, many grocers close for New Year’s Day since it is a federal holiday. Check your local store’s holiday hours.
