H-E-B is starting construction on a new grocery store in this corner of the Metroplex

H-E-B is starting construction this month on a new store in Forney, about 20 miles east of downtown Dallas.

Located at the corner of U.S. 80 and Gateway Boulevard, the Kaufman County store will be almost 140,000 square feet.

Construction is expected to cost over $42 million and be completed in late 2025, according to state filings. The H-E-B will be the first in Forney and include a True Texas BBQ restaurant.

The H-E-B will be part of the Villages at Gateway, a shopping center being built off North Gateway Boulevard near U.S. 80. Developed by StreetLevel Investments, the retail hub is likely to be complete in late 2025 or early 2026. Target and Home Depot are also expected to open stores in the development.

H-E-B has rapidly expanded in the Metroplex over the past few years, growing its footprint among legions of North Texas consumers eager for more stores. In June, H-E-B opened in Mansfield and brought the area’s first Joe V’s Smart Shop to Dallas.

H-E-B in Alliance, the grocer’s first Tarrant County store, opened in April. A Rockwall store is expected to open in 2025, and locations in Melissa, Prosper and Frisco are under construction. H-E-B also has plans for a store in Glade Parks, which is likely to open in mid- to late-2026. An Irving location announced in August is expected to open in 2026.

H-E-B opened stores in McKinney and Allen in 2023. The company purchased roughly 15 acres near The Shops at Chisholm Trail in early 2023, but no plans for a store there have been announced.

One of the largest private companies in the U.S., H-E-B’s annual revenue was $43.6 billion in 2023. The San Antonio-based company has over 435 stores across Texas and Mexico, and employs over 154,000 people.

Disclosure: H-E-B is a funder of the Star-Telegram’s Crossroads Lab. The company has no influence over editorial decisions.
