‘Bags Fly Free’? Not anymore. What to know about Southwest Airlines’ new changes
If you’ve flown Southwest out of Dallas Love Field airport, you’ve probably taken advantage of the airline’s biggest perk — two free checked bags.
For years, it set Southwest apart from other airlines, making travel more budget-friendly for Texans who like to pack without worrying about extra fees.
But that’s about to change.
Starting May 28, Southwest will begin charging most passengers for checked luggage, officially ending its longtime “Bags Fly Free” policy. The airline also said that it will implement a new Basic rate on its lowest-priced tickets purchased on or after May 28.
Here’s what we know so far about the policy change and how it could affect your next flight.
Why is Southwest changing its ‘Bags Fly Free’ policy?
This is just the latest shakeup at Southwest since the company restructured its board as a part of a settlement with activist investor Elliott Management in 2024.
In July 2024, Southwest announced it would move to assigned seating and start offering premium seating for the first time, including seats with more leg room.
In February, the airline announced it would start offering redeye flights for the first time, starting with these routes: Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando; Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville; and Phoenix to Baltimore.
Southwest is implementing this new bag fee policy as part of a move to balance loyalty rewards with new ways to serve even more customers, according to a Tuesday, March 11 news release.
How much does it cost to check a bag with Southwest?
Southwest hasn’t yet revealed the exact fee amounts for the first and second checked bags, but checking a third bag currently costs $150 on their website.
In the future, expect that Southwest’s fees will be competitive with other major U.S. carriers — which start at $35 for the first bag on American, United, and Delta airlines.
How can I avoid the new fees?
If you’re one of Southwest’s loyal flyers, you won’t have to worry about those extra fees.
Under the new policy, free checked bags will still be available for these select travelers:
- Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select Fare Travelers: Two free checked bags
- A-List Members and Other Select Customers: Entitled to one free checked bag
- Rapid Rewards Credit Card Holders: Receive credit for one free checked bag
Visit the Southwest Airlines website to join a loyalty program and get membership benefits.
Can I still bring a carry-on?
Yes. There’s no mention in the press release of any changes to its carry-on policy. Southwest customers can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item with them on the plane for free.
