A Korean restaurant in south Fort Worth has reopened under new owners

A local south Fort Worth favorite, Sam Won Gardens, has reopened as Sam Won Korean Cuisine.

Local foodies were sad to hear owner Sylvia Chung (Momma Chung) retired and closed the south Fort Worth restaurant in October of last year. Sam Won was owned by the Chung family since 2005 and survived Covid and the passing of Sylvia’s husband Own in 2022.

Customers loved the restaurant for its home-style Korean cooking. Menu favorites included bibimbap (a rice-veggie-meat bowl), marinated bulgogi meats that were grilled or cooked in broth on the table-top stove and lunch bento box specials with kimchi, tempura, dumplings and protein of choice.

The new Sam Won is in a soft-opening phase under new owners, in the same building at 5201 McCart Ave.

What’s different about Sam Won Korean Cuisine

A member from the Fort Worth Foodie Facebook group said visiting the new Sam Won Korean Cuisine “was like coming home again.”

They noted that the menu has barely changed, although prices are higher than before. Since the restaurant is still in its soft opening phase, there are no soup, bento boxes or fish dishes yet.

According to the Sam Won Korean Cuisine website, grilled mackerel, yellow corvina and cutlass fish will be available. Braised sablefish and stir-fried squid is also on the menu.

For starters, there are seafood and kimchi pancakes, dumplings and stir-fired glass noodles. Bento boxes will be served for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to bibimbap, there is also donkatsu and tteokbokki rice cakes.

Chung’s daughter Sunah Cee confirmed in a Facebook comment the Chungs are no longer the owners, but encouraged Sam Won customers to still go support.

Sam Won Korean Cuisine has not responded to Star-Telegram emails or calls for further comment about the updated menu, opening hours or new ownership.
