Roaches, dirty equipment found during Arlington restaurant inspections; 3 closed

Three Arlington restaurants were temporarily closed and another establishment failed after inspectors found roaches and unsanitary conditions during the August 17-30 health inspections, according to data from the city and compiled by the Star-Telegram.

Asian Bowl at 285 Southwest Plaza scored 72 on Aug. 28 and was closed for critical violations. Food contact surfaces were covered in residue and some employees weren’t using gloves, a city spokesperson told the Star-Telegram. The establishment also had a problem with roaches.

The restaurant was allowed to reopen Aug. 30 after a follow-up inspection.

Mahogany’s Chop House and Lounge at 1700 W. Park Row Drive scored 79 on Aug. 28 and was closed for several violations. The reach-in coolers weren’t keeping food at a safe temperature, the spokesperson said. The inspector also noted a cockroach infestation and an overall lack of cleanliness throughout the facility.

Mahogany’s Chop House and Lounge was allowed to reopen after a Sept. 4 follow-up inspection.

ChefTemii at 1900 W. Arbrook Blvd. scored 81 on Aug. 27 and was closed by the city for a number of critical violations, including roaches. According to the spokesperson, the inspector found an accumulation of food and grease on equipment and food contact surfaces.

ChefTemii reopened after an Aug. 28 follow-up inspection.

Arlington restaurants are scored on a 100-point system, with 100 being a perfect score. Restaurants and other places that serve food that score 75 or less require a follow-up inspection, and a score of 70 is considered extremely poor.

One establishment, Rubi’s Restaurant at 941 W. Pioneer Parkway, scored lower than 70 and failed the recent inspections. According to the city spokesperson, some employees weren’t washing their hands before preparing food and the reach-in coolers weren’t maintaining a safe temperature. The inspector also noticed dirty equipment and improper food cooling methods.

The facility was given a 68 on Aug. 21 and will require a follow-up inspection. Rubi’s Restaurant has a history of low scores and needing follow-up inspections, according to previous reports, but this is the first time it’s failed in recent years.

Five establishments, including Lynridge of Arlington Assisted Living And Memory Care at 3424 W. Interstate 20, received a perfect score of 100.
