Moldy utensils, dirty kitchen, roaches found in Dallas restaurant inspections

Two Dallas restaurants failed their health inspections and seven required re-inspection, with violations at some locations including moldy utensils, a dirty kitchen, roaches and rodent droppings, the city’s recent inspection records show.

This report compiled by the Star-Telegram includes health violations from Aug 3-9 and the results of 174 inspections.

Leo Y Churro Taqueria, at 9430 Larga Drive # 120, failed an inspection due to various health hazards including dirty kitchen floors, walk-in coolers and soiled knife wall holders; cross contamination; and food stored at unsafe temperatures among other violations. The eatery scored 68.

Stratos Bar & Grill, at 2907 W. Northwest Highway, failed after health inspectors observed violations including moldy utensils, food stored at unsafe temperatures and food without proper expiration date labels. The restaurant scored 69 and was also told to have a certified food manager on site during all hours of operation and food handler certificates for all employees on site.

Dallas’ health inspections function on a 100-point system: A score of 100 is considered perfect and scores below 70 are considered failing, with reinspections required within 10 days.

Seven restaurants needed to be re-inspected:

  • Andy’s Food Mart, at 2403 N. Fitzhugh Ave. Score: 72.
  • Roma’s Italian Bistro, at 839 W. Jefferson Blvd. Score: 73.
  • Taco Joint, at 6434 E. Mockingbird Lane Ste 101. Score: 74.
  • St Pete’s Dancing Marlin, at 2730 Commerce St. Score: 75.
  • Pizza Large, at 4817 Ross Ave. Score: 76.
  • Meso Maya, at 4123 Abrams Road. Score: 77.
  • Mister Charles, at 3219 Knox St. #170. Score: 78

Flies and rodent droppings were observed at two restaurants:

  • Bryan Street Tavern, at 4315 Bryan St. Score 80. Inspectors observed rat droppings within the dry storage shelf and many flies within the food prep area.
  • Gong Cha Dallas, at 11613 N. Central Expressway Ste 106A. Score: 80. Rodent droppings were observed at the back storage area.

Roaches were observed at:

  • Lyari Cafe, at 11641 Harry Hines Blvd Ste 201. Score: 83.
  • Walgreens #07783, at 2301 Lakeland Drive. Score: 92.
