Fort Worth locals love this Vietnamese spot’s egg rolls: ‘The best anywhere’
Each week, we’re sharing Fort Worth-area restaurant recommendations that come from our very own Star-Telegram readers.
These aren’t popular chains or well-known establishments. They are neighborhood “hidden gems,” the type of mom-and-pop eateries that have built a loyal following among locals who’ve discovered them in Fort Worth or our suburbs.

My Lan Vietnamese Restaurant ($), Haltom City
▪ Where is this restaurant? A strip center at 4015 E. Belknap St. in Haltom City.
▪ What readers recommend about My Lan Vietnamese Restaurant:
”We lived in Thailand and often went to Vietnam. The food was wonderful, but we were always comparing it to My Lan’s egg rolls. Their fried egg rolls are the best anywhere. Vermicelli bowl with pork, Yang Chow fried rice, Chow Fun with wide noodles.”
▪ What else to know: This no-frills family restaurant was established in 1996, and its many rave reviews online include mentions of those delicious egg rolls. One user on Yelp suggests a “pro tip” of wrapping them in the lettuce they come with and dipping them in fish sauce. In 2019, the owners opened a second location in Colleyville called My Lan Vietnamese Kitchen with a more condensed menu “using the same recipes that my mother passed on to me,” co-owner Lan Trinh says. Catfish & Co. Fish House ($-$), Hurst
▪ Where is this restaurant? A shopping center off Airport Freeway near the Hurst Conference Center and TCC.
▪ What readers recommend about Catfish & Co:
“Family owned and operated since 1983! Their hushpuppies are to die for!”
“40 years of great food & service, also great catfish & seafood at affordable prices.”
▪ What else to know: ”Catfish” is their name, but there’s a ton of other seafood options on the menu, including salmon, trout, red snapper, flounder, Cajun gumbos and po’boys, low country boils, oysters and crab legs. Check for weekly specials. . See the menu.
The Beacon Cafe ($-$), far north Fort Worth
▪ Where is this restaurant? 12701 U.S. 287 Business, aka North Saginaw Boulevard, just south of Avondale.
▪ What readers recommend about The Beacon Cafe:
“It’s hard to choose between having a burger or breakfast. Chef Christie has been in the burger business a long time but the Beacon shines brightest at breakfast! I always get the Beacon breakfast with two pancakes so I can give my husband one to enjoy with his delicious cheeseburger. They have awesome, friendly service, too!”
▪ What else to know: The restaurant started in 2011 as a quirky airport cafe at Hicks Airfield. In 2019, it expanded with a second location just two miles away. In 2020, due to COVID, the original location closed. Today the restaurant is operating out of its second location off U.S. 287. See the menu.
Prima’s Pizza & Pasta ($-$), South Hulen at Granbury Road
▪ Where is this restaurant? 6108 S. Hulen St. in Fort Worth, next to Hulen Square shopping center.
▪ What a reader recommends about Prima’s Pizza & Pasta:
“The food is as close to authentic Italian as I’ve found in Fort Worth. Wait staff are pleasant and attentive. Prices reasonable and amount of food makes at least two meals. Hard to pick just one item to recommend although the chicken parmigiana and eggplant parmigiana are really good.”
▪ What else to know: Established in 1984, this site began as a Dairy Queen before being transformed into an Italian restaurant by owner Peter Kaba. See the menu.
