A bumpy landing for Beacon Cafe: Airport restaurant moves to 2nd location near Saginaw
Beacon Cafe has closed its Hicks Field location, ending nine years as a quirky airport cafe where diners could eat hefty burgers while watching planes land at the private airfield north of Saginaw.
Beacon continues at 12721 N. Saginaw Blvd., a highway location north of Saginaw that owner Christie Bingham opened earlier this year as she battled with airfield managers and regulators over whether a security gate could be left open for the public to come in, including restaurant diners.
Beacon is moving due to the “difficult conditions created by COVID-19” and the ongoing dispute over the gate, she wrote on Facebook Tuesday.
“We promise to keep and uphold the standards of our tiny cafe: five-star food in the friendliest cafe in Texas,” Bingham wrote.
Beacon’s original location delighted children who came for breakfast or brunch buffets and to watch the planes at 171 Aviator Drive overlooking airplanes landing.
For years, the Beacon was the nearby neighborhood’s only restaurant and drew families for Sunday brunch specials such as pineapple upside-down pancakes, now served at the North Saginaw Boulevard location. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a menu brunch is now served instead of a buffet.
