This iconic downtown Fort Worth building will be home to a new Mexican restaurant

Beverly’s Downtown is expected to open in the basement of the Hogan Building in downtown Fort Worth later this year.

This new elevated dining experience from the owners of Cousins BBQ will bring a bold and fresh take on Mexican cuisine.

Downtown Fort Worth already has its fair share of upscale restaurants, but few options for Mexican food – a staple here in Texas.

The closest options are Toro Toro in the Worthington Renaissance Hotel, which serves Pan-Latin cuisine, or Mi Cocina, if you want a more casual Tex-Mex eatery. There are also a few takeout taco shops, like Paco’s Mexican Cuisine on West 4th Street and Salsa Limon on Thockmorton. Tia’s On The Bluff is another in the downtown area on E Bluff Street.

“We’re not trying to replicate the traditional Mexican restaurant experience,” Beverly‘s Downtown co-owner Jeff Payne wrote in a news release. “Instead, we’re moving the needle forward while respecting the roots of the cuisine— creating something unique, sexy, familiar, and entirely new.”

Here’s what we know about the new 7,000-square foot restaurant.

Beverly’s Downtown

Beverly’s Downtown will be located in the basement of the iconic Hogan Building on 901 Houston St. in downtown Fort Worth sometime in the fall of winter 2025. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner only.

Maven, a Fort Worth interior design firm, is in charge of designing Beverly’s. The basement location ensures the restaurant will have a speakeasy feel to it, with “rustic textures, moody lighting, creating a dining room that embraces its subterranean character,” according to a news release.

The only glimpse into the menu is a modern take on “bread service,” where guests will enjoy heirloom flour and corn blend tortillas served with cultured butter mixed with pickled onion. What we know for sure is that the menu will represent all cuisines of Mexico.

Beverly’s Downtown is co-owned by Payne and Jason Cross, owners of Cousins BBQ.

Cousins BBQ is a Fort Worth staple, serving more than just standard Texas barbecue - there’s also frito pies, fried wings, specialty sandwiches and baked potatoes. There are five Cousins locations in North Texas, including two in Fort Worth.

Payne and Cross also own The Mont, a New American restaurant that is expected to open soon at 4729 Saint Amand Cir. in Fort Worth.

What is the historical Hogan Building?

A third story was added to the Hogan Building in 1911, and since then it has been used for a multitude of things.

Originally, John Shelton leased the property to S.H. Kress Company. After they moved in 1936, McCrory’s Variety Store remodeled the building into an “art deco” style in 1937. Then, Royal Hogan bought the building to be the Hogan Office Supply Co. for years to come.

In 2012, the Downtown Design Review Board renovated it again to make it look like its original 1910 storefront. This remodel wrapped up in 2014. The building now operates as a Fed-Ex copy and printing center on the ground floor.
