The Daytripper stops by Fort Worth to show new PBS nature docuseries on Texas
Chet Garner, aka The Daytripper, stopped by Fort Worth on Thursday evening to showcase his new PBS docuseries about Texas.
“Making a Million: Daytripping with The Nature Conservancy in Texas” sees Garner explore several of the Nature Conservancy’s protected areas like the Davis Mountains Preserve and Diamon Y Spring Preserve in West Texas.
The three-episode series comes as the Nature Conservancey’s Texas chapter celebrates more than 60 years of operation and over one million acres protected. One episode is about West Texas, another is on grasslands and another entry is about freshwater.
Garner, whose Daytripper content typically focuses on the story of a single Texas town, said the project allowed him to explore a much bigger canvas.
“The things that happen out west affect everything that happens on the coast and vice versa,” Garner told the Star-Telegram before the event on April 16. “It’s like nature’s all connected or something.”
PBS docuseries screens in Fort Worth
A few dozen folks gathered at the Kimbell Art Museum on Thursday evening to watch an episode of “Making a Million” and hear a panel discussion from Garner and Nature Conservancy staff.
The West Texas episode was on the docket and featured interviews with Kaylee French, West Texas project director, and Charlotte Reemts, ecologist and science project director. Both French and Reemts attended the screening, along with Brandon Belcher, the Nature Conservancy’s North Texas preserves manager, who is featured in the grasslands episode.
Some of the Nature Conservancy’s work can be complex, so having someone like Garner translate what’s happening can help get the organization’s mission across.
“He has made what we do digestiable for the layperson,” French told the Star-Telegram. “That is a true skill.”
“Making a Million,” which is underwritten by H-E-B, is available on PBS stations across Texas.
In Dallas-Fort Worth, the next airing of the series is at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 19. The episodes are also available on both The Daytripper and Nature Conservancy’s YouTube channels.
