‘A little hot’: Taylor Sheridan’s ’1923’ cast talks filming new season in Texas
“1923” star Jennifer Carpenter became a “full-fledged Texas fan” after filming the show’s second season in the Lone Star State.
Carpenter, who plays real-life U.S. deputy marshal Mamie Fossett, spent a good amount of time in South Texas shooting the Paramount+ series last year.
“People were incredible, the landscapes were stunning,” Carpenter said. “So what about the heat? Who cares? It was great.”
Carpenter was one of a few actors who spoke to the Star-Telegram about the new season of Taylor Sheridan’s “1923.”
The series is a prequel to “Yellowstone” and follows the Dutton family amid the Prohibition, Western expansion and the aftermath of World War I. Season one premiered in November 2022 and season two premieres Sunday, Feb. 23, on Paramount+.
Production of “1923” season 2 began last summer and wrapped in the fall, after filming scenes in Montana and Texas. Austin, Lockhart, Bartlett and San Antonio were all transformed into the 1920s for filming.
Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, Aminah Nieves and Jerome Flynn star in the series. Here’s a synopsis for season 2:
“A cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.”
‘Landman’ and ‘1923’ star on missing Texas
Michelle Randolph has been pulling double duty for Sheridan over the last few years.
First, Randolph appeared in “1923” as Elizabeth Strafford and then joined the Fort Worth-filmed “Landman” as Ainsley Norris. Now, she’s back in the saddle for the early 20th century show but spent all of her filming in Montana.
“I thought for a long time that I was going to spend time in Austin,” Randolph said. “Then when everyone went down, I was like, ‘Why can’t I go? Can I do a fitting there or something? Is there anything that you need me for?’”
‘1923’ stars gush over Austin
French actor Sebastian Roché split filming between Amarillo and Austin.
Roché, who plays Father Renaud, enjoyed his time in Texas despite the heat, which brought along its own challenges given his clerical character’s wool outfit. However, it all added to his character’s arc this season.
“We are on a journey through the west and that really, for me, was really special,” Roché said. “Especially discovering Palo Duro Canyon out of Amarillo, which I [had] never been to.”
Canadian actor Darren Mann had been to Texas before, but this was his first time working in the Lone Star State.
He also enjoyed the “super fun city” of Austin and said he visited Joe Rogan’s Comedy Mothership while in town. Despite the fun time, Mann agreed that Texas weather isn’t his favorite.
“A little hot for a Canadian fellow like me, but it’s a good town,” Mann said.
One of the best parts of the acting business is getting to explore new places, Julia Schlaepfer said.
Schlaepfer filmed all over Texas as Alexandra, who will spend the second season traveling across the country to the Dutton Ranch in Montana. She was based in Austin and said it was a “totally different” experience.
“I’m learning so much about the United States and so much about the world through this job,” Schlaepfer said. “We had a great time up there.”
“1923” season 2 premieres Sunday, Feb. 23, on Paramount+.
