Missing ‘Yellowstone’? This new Netflix series set in Texas Hill Country may do the trick

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” may be over, but a new Western series looks like it might be familiar ground for fans.

Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon” stars Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly and James Brolin. The Texas Hill Country-set series is based on Texas author Jodi Thomas’ “Ransom Canyon” romance book series.

Here’s a synopsis and trailer for the show that premieres on April 17:

“Welcome to Ransom Canyon, where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country. With three ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land, their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life.”

A Western series tackling love, loss and loyalty sounds right in line with “Yellowstone.”

The trailer for “Ransom Canyon” also shows plenty of cowboy hats, ranch life and open vistas. North Texas native Charley Crockett (seen at the 22 second mark) also seems to have a cameo in the series.

While set in the Texas Hill Country, the series was actually filmed in New Mexico, according to the state’s film office. Production began in the Land of Enchantment in spring 2024.

Thomas, an Amarillo native, wrote the first book in the “Ransom Canyon” series in 2015.

There are 10 total books in the series, split between eight direct stories and two anthology pieces. The latest book in the series — “Christmas in Winter Valley” — published in 2019.

Ransom Canyon is also the name of a real Texas town, although it’s located in Lubbock County and not in the Texas Hill Country.

“Ransom Canyon” premieres April 17 on Netflix.
