From live music to rodeos, here’s what to do for Mother’s Day weekend in Fort Worth
Mother’s Day is Sunday, and if you’re looking for last minute ideas on how to spend the weekend with the mother figure in your life, there are a number of events in the Fort Worth area to add to your calendar.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in 1914. According to the National Archives and Records Administration, Wilson made the day as “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”
From special movie screenings, to neighborhood concerts and rodeo events, this Mother’s Day weekend in Fort Worth has something for everyone.
Here are events happening in the Fort Worth area this Mother’s Day weekend.
Friday on the Green
- When: May 12, 5-10 p.m.
- Where: Magnolia Green, 1201 Lipscomb Street
Friday on the Green is a free neighborhood picnic event in the Near Southside neighborhood which features live music, food and drinks and retail vendors.
This Friday’s headliner is Jake Paleschic with performances by Cool Jacket, Jaybirds, Ginny Mac and DJ Woodywood.
The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo
- When: May 13, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Where: Cowtown Coliseum, 121 East Exchange Avenue
- Tickets: From $15
The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo celebrates and honors Black cowboys and cowgirls’ contributions to building the west, according to the rodeo mission statement.
This cultural event gives families the opportunity to enjoy and embrace the cowboy culture while being educated and entertained with reenactments, history highlights and western adventure.
Como Community Mother’s Day Luncheon
- When: May 13, noon to 3 p.m.
- Where: Como Community Center, 4660 Horne St.
Opening Doors for Women in Need, Como Lions Heart and Richelle’s Heart will host its 23rd annual Mother’s Day luncheon on Saturday. The free event will honor 25 mothers across Fort Worth and will include food, entertainment and more.
Como Lions Heart is a locally owned, nonprofit organization that supports families, youth and seniors through community based programs. Opening Doors for Women in Need is an organization that helps men and women re-enter society after being incarcerated.
Mother’s Day special film screenings: Rooftop Cinema Club
- When: May 14, 7:15 and 9:50 p.m.
- Where: 235 Throckmorton St.
- Tickets: $19.50 per screening
The Rooftop Cinema Club, located on top of The Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth Hotel, will screen two “mom” themed movies: “Mamma Mia!” and Oscar winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
The outdoor theater setup includes a large screen, comfortable seating and personal wireless headphones for a clearer audio experience.
“Mamma Mia” will screen at 7:15 p.m., and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will screen at 9:50 p.m.
John Wayne Museum: An American Experience
- When: May 14
- Where: 2501 Rodeo Plaza
- Tickets: Free admission for all mothers, $21.95 adults, $17.95 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under
All mothers receive free admission for the John Wayne: An American Experience exhibit on Sunday. Celebrate mom in the Stockyards and learn about the iconic actor.
