Mac Engel as a hockey goalie? Watch him fend off shots from a local NHL Draft prospect
He cannot play goalie, nor can he play hockey.
He can't skate, either.
But Fort Worth Star-Telegram sports columnist Mac Engel did cover the Dallas Stars as a beat writer for several seasons. He is hoping that ability to report on a hockey team translates to the ice, specifically between the pipes.
On Monday at the Dr Pepper Stars Center in Farmer's Branch, Engel put on some well-worn goalie gear from Star-Telegram sports writer Peter Dawson, who actually does play, to face a real shot from a real player.
Forward Ryan O'Reilly, from Southlake, took to the ice to see if he could score on a guy who can barely stand up on skates.
Don't laugh. Harder than it looks.
O'Reilly is expected to be drafted around the third round of the NHL Draft, which is on Friday in Dallas.
But before he goes to the NHL, O'Reilly must see if he can score on a guy who literally cannot play the game.
