Five Thoughts from Cowboys Camp
Stephen Jones sounded a little bit like Wade Phillips on Friday when asked to explain that the Cowboys made a run at backup quarterback Nick Foles one day after owner Jerry Jones said the team didn’t make a big push for Foles. “Whatever he said I agree with,” Stephen Jones said with a laugh. Stephen makes a point to not go against his father publicly, but there was no discrepancy as to who is closer to the situation and closer to the negotiations. Stephen is the one making the calls and negotiating the deals.
Receiver Dez Bryant made a highlight catch against cornerback Brandon Carr in 1-on-1 drills, but Carr more than held his own the rest of the day. Carr ripped a ball out of Bryant’s hands on a slant in team drills, causing a fumble that the defense picked up. Carr also had a tipped interception of Tony Romo off the hands of receiver Terrance Williams. Carr has no picks the past two years.
Tight end Geoff Swaim is taking advantage of some opportunities in practice with Gavin Escobar limited because he is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and James Hanna out with a knee injury. Swaim is getting more reps with the first-team offense and caught more passes in practice Friday than he has since joining the Cowboys as a seventh-round pick from Texas last year. He played in four games and caught one pass last year as a rookie. Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and second-year man Jameill Showers have made a point to look for him.
The defense dominated the “compete” portion of practice against the offense. Corner Josh Thomas kept pace with Andy Jones and knocked Tony Romo’s pass away. Linebacker Mark Nzeocha ran over rookie running back Darius Jackson in pass protection, linebacker James Morris got the better of tight end Rico Gathers, and defensive end Ryan Russell got by tackle Cameron Bradfield with relative ease.
Romo and Bryant are getting back in sync after a little rust and some struggles the first few days of camp. “I think it’s always there,” Bryant said. “Just knocking off a little bit of rust, I guess, if that’s what you’ll call it. Just knocking it off, getting back to good habits. And I think that’s exactly what we’re doing. We both love it. We want to come out and make plays. It’s what we love to do. It’s what we’re going to do.”
