They’re baaack!

The Dallas Cowboys return to training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on Thursday, when the team charter plan is scheduled to land in Southern California.

There are plenty of issues surrounding the team. That’s no surprise. In fact, that’s one of the things that makes this franchise so intriguing. The Cowboys are coming off an injury-filled 4-12 season.

Here’s a look at five issues facing the Cowboys heading into training camp:

Is Tony Romo 100 percent?

Quarterback Tony Romo was making all the necessary throws during the off-season and minicamp and is deemed ready to go. However, his recovery from a Mumford procedure on his left collarbone, which was broken twice last season, won’t truly be known until he’s hit in real-time speed during the regular season. Until then, just seeing him back on the field and in control is a positive.

Suspensions put defense in a pinch

Linebacker Rolando McClain is suspended for 10 games. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is suspended for four games. Defensive end Randy Gregory is suspended for four games. All three key defensive cogs were sidelined by the NFL for substance abuse violations. There’s not a lot of time for waiting in a 16-game season. Some others will have to step up and deliver on defense.

Top receiver playing catch up

Bryant has constantly said he’s eager to return to his Pro Bowl play after last year’s injury-plagued season that resulted in career lows across the board. He has been cleared by doctors and is fully recovered from surgery in January to repair his fractured foot. It remains to be seen how much work he gets in training camp. Physically, he looks ready to go.

A backfield in motion

Rookie first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott has drawn league-wide praise for his potential on the field since his name was called at the NFL Draft. He is described as the most NFL-ready back in some time. But there is some off-the-field baggage with the on-field praise. Elliott was accused of domestic assault last week. He has denied the allegations. Darren McFadden may be available in preseason despite suffering a broken elbow in mysterious fashion last month. Then there’s Alfred Morris, Lance Dunbar and sixth-round rookie sleeper pick Darius Jackson.

Looking into the corners

Morris Claiborne signed a one-year deal to stay in Dallas. Brandon Carr accepted a pay cut to stay. Orlando Scandrick is back after missing all of last season with two torn ligaments in his right knee. Versatile defensive back Byron Jones is in his second season. No one can predict injuries, but this position might be the X-factor going forward.
