Cowboys reward chief scout Will McClay’s loyalty with 2-year contract extension
Every time an opening for a general manager comes up, Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay’s name gets mentioned.
But McClay, who has been with the Cowboys since 2002, has declined to move. On Friday, the Cowboys rewarded his loyalty with a two-year contract extension, sources confirmed.
McClay turned down an opportunity to interview for the general manager's job with the Houston Texans this off-season, even though he is a native of that city and went to college at Rice.
It’s also important to note that the McClay has little chance of being promoted to general manager in Dallas.
Owner Jerry Jones holds that title with son, executive vice president Stephen Jones, being second in command.
Still, the Cowboys hold McClay in high regard.
He knows it and they value it, which is why he received a contract extension.
McClay has run the Cowboys scouting department since 2014 and overseen the drafting of franchise cornerstones Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin, running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott.
