Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no regrets about impeding contract negotiations between the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell.

And Jones remains hopeful that the six-member compensation committee holds off on finalizing an extension with Goodell until the owners meet on Dec. 13 in Irving.

Jones threatened to a file a lawsuit against the league if Goodell’s extension was approved by the compensation committee and not presented to the entire group of owners. Back in May, the 32 owners unanimously gave the committee authority to negotiate Goodell’s extension.

Jones has withdrawn his legal threat, but expressed optimism about the owners discussing the deal next month.

Asked if the compensation committee would wait, Jones said: “I hope they do. I hope they do. One thing I will say is that we’ve gotten some very positive things done through this exercise and process of extending Roger.

“There’s more to come that is going to be very good for everybody.”

Jones has been outspoken about slowing down the process to extend Goodell, whose contract expires after the 2018 season.

The NFL has been entrenched with controversy of late, including falling TV ratings, player protests during the national anthem and discipline handed out by Goodell.

Jones feels everything he’s done has been in the league’s best interests and hasn’t changed his position concerning Goodell’s extension.

“I really have never met anybody eye to eye lately that didn’t think that my interests were in the best interest of the NFL,” Jones said. “I really haven’t had anybody basically state that. I’m fortunate that I’ve had the time and spent the time and done the things that have happened in the NFL that I don’t have to explain in doing what’s in the best interest of the NFL in my mind.

“It’s been my experience that you can be an advocate, you can be passionate about what you want to do and my experience has been that has improved the NFL most of the time.”
