Tyson Ross hopes to take confidence from debut into Wednesday start

It has been a long time since Tyson Ross has been back in a five-man rotation. The right-hander will make his second start for the Rangers against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Ross held the Mariners to two runs on two hits in 5 2/3 innings in his first start in over a year on Friday. The success gave confidence he hopes carry into Wednesday.

“Yeah, definitely. You have to build off every positive you can and the last outing was nice for me to get out there after a long delay and coming away with a win and feeling healthy,” he said. “So I’m looking forward to this one and getting another win.”

Ross said the Blue Jays’ offense, which includes multiple powerful sluggers, provides a good test for any pitcher.

“You just have to make good pitches and limit the damage,” he said. “They had a couple big hits with runners in scoring position [Monday night] and that kind of was the difference in the ball game.”

The Rangers will continue to monitor Ross’s pitch count since he’s still building up stamina and arm strength.

“He'll continue to build. Where that pitch counts gets to is predicated on how well he pitches,” Manager Jeff Banister said. “Early on, just like everybody else —[Andrew] Cashner, [Yu] Darvish, [Martin] Perez. We’ll monitor that, pay attention to it, because long-term success and careers are important too.”
