Texas Rangers

Rangers tame Tigers for 10th straight win

Nick Martinez allowed an unearned run in five innings Friday, and Joey Gallo and Mike Napoli swatted home runs as the Texas Rangers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

The 10-game streak is the fourth-longest in club history and the longest since the 2010 team won 11 in a row from June 12-24.

How Rangers hitters fared: The Rangers scored the game’s first three runs, the first two coming in the third thanks to some wild pitching by Daniel Norris. ... Ryan Rua opened the inning with a single, and with one out Norris walked Delino DeShields, hit Shin-Soo Choo and walked Elvis Andrus with the bases loaded. Jonathan Lucroy followed with a fielder’s choice. ... Napoli connected for his ninth homer to start the third. ... Gallo struck out in his first two at-bats before going deep for the 13th time this season. The blast came with two outs and was against the left-handed Norris.

How Rangers pitchers fared: Nick Martinez allowed four hits and one unearned run in five innings, but a 25-pitch fourth innings forced him out of the game before the sixth at 92 pitches. ... Martinez had only one 1-2-3 inning, the first, and pitched around either a two-out hit or a two-out walk in the second, third and fifth. ... He appeared to be out of more two-out trouble in the fourth, but Elvis Andrus’ throw to second for an inning-ending force out was wide. ... Andrew Romine followed with a single for the unearned run. ... Tony Barnette recovered in the sixth after the first two Tigers reached second and third with no outs. Detroit scored only once. ... Keone Kela worked two scoreless innings, including a perfect seventh. ... Matt Bush faced trouble in the ninth, allowing an unearned run and facing the potential game-winning run. He needed 33 pitches for his fifth save.
