Rangers surprise retiring coach Bobby Jones with classic Mustang

Rangers coach Bobby Jones was surprised to see his wife Debbie in the dugout Wednesday afternoon. And then he noticed the entire team, coaches, front office staff and co-owner Ray Davis converging. They all surprised Jones, who is retiring at the end of the season after 50 years in pro baseball, with a gift. After playing a video montage of pictures and video of his career and life on the Globe Life Park video board, Colby Lewis drove a bright shiny red 1965 Ford Mustang onto the field right up to Jones behind home plate.

It’s the type of car of Jones bought after his first season in pro ball in 1967. When he left for a 14-month tour in Vietnam in 1969 he loaned it to his brother, who eventually traded it in for a Plymouth Roadrunner before Jones returned to the States.

“Unbelievable,” said a visibly emotional Jones. “It’s a dream come true. I always wanted another one. I’ll cherish it, that’s for sure.”
