Spieth changes caddie during Saturday round at Dean & DeLuca

Jordan Spieth’s caddie Michael Greller was no longer on the bag for the Dallas native, as Spieth remained in contention at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, at minus-3 after 16 holes Saturday. Spieth carded his second-straight 68 Saturday to go into Sunday at minus-4 for the week.

The change on the bag, to Spieth’s personal trainer Damon Goddard, came after the 11th hole during Saturday’s third round. PGA Tour media relations officials tweeted that Greller was seeking treatment in the onsite medical facility at Colonial Country Club for heat-related illness, just after 3 p.m.

On the 11th hole, while Spieth and fellow Dallasite Kelly Kraft waited to tee off, Spieth jokingly warned Goddard in the gallery that he may need to tag him in on the bag, as Greller was “struggling a little.” As the group made their way down the 11th fairway, Greller informed Spieth that would be his last hole.

“I guess it just got him early on today,” Spieth said. “So Damon came on the bag. ... [Greller] said he’s be plenty fine by tomorrow. Just had to pack it in, otherwise something really bad could have happened. It was a no-brainer situation.”

Spieth played the remaining seven holes with Goddard on the bag at 1-under, carding birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 on the way in.

“It’s a little awkward. I end up stepping off stuff,” Spieth said. “So it maybe slows the pace down a little bit, but other than that, it felt fine. It was tough out there because it was so hot.”

The heat index reached 106 degrees Saturday afternoon.

After Wednesday’s pre-tournament media availability session, Spieth said Greller had planned to attend Friday night’s U2 concert at AT&T Stadium. There was no immediate confirmation as to whether Greller was in attendance at the show that ended just after 11 p.m.
