Southlake Carroll bounces back to defeat Arlington Martin

Southlake Carroll senior Robert Barnes is a four-star safety, committed to play for Bob Stoops and Oklahoma. He did most of his work Friday night on offense.

Barnes caught six passes for 152 yards, and running backs Audricke Gaines and Jack Johansson combined for 152 yards rushing and five touchdowns as the Dragons defeated Arlington Martin 37-14 at Dragon Stadium.

“We’ve had Robert working at receiver all through camp,” Carroll coach Hal Wasson said.

Barnes said he hasn’t played receiver before this season since he was in the fifth grade. He had five catches for 141 yards in the first half.

“Robert felt good tonight, didn’t have to play as many snaps and did what we expected,” Wasson said. “We expected him to go out and make plays and he’s an outstanding athlete.”

The Dragons (1-1) avoided their first 0-2 start since 2000.

Carroll, which lost to Tulsa Union 21-10 last week, made quick work on its first drive, going 70 yards on four plays in 44 seconds as Johansson scored on a 3-yard run.

The defense also answered, holding Martin to a three-and-out.

After the Warriors (1-1) punted the ball back, Johansson gave the Dragons a 14-0 lead with 7:22 left in the quarter on his second touchdown from 2 yards out.

Martin, which routed Dallas Skyline 55-7 in Week 1, punted on its first four possessions before getting a spark on special teams.

Warriors coach Bob Wager called for a fake punt at his own 28-yard line on fourth-and-2 midway through the second. The Warriors converted and four plays later scored on Juma Otoviano’s 1-yard touchdown run to get within 14-7.

But Carroll responded to go up 20-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Gaines with 2:12 left in the first half.

Gaines, who finished with 140 yards on 22 carries, scored his second touchdown to start the fourth quarter for a 30-7 lead, which came after Barnes forced a Martin fumble.

Jacob Doddridge intercepted a Martin pass on the ensuing drive and Johansson added his third score from 27 yards out to put the Dragons on top 37-7 with 8:12 to play.

Mason Holmes went 15 of 27 passing for 319 yards. Carroll gained 562 yards of total offense after just 255 yards against Tulsa Union.

Tre Henderson scored Martin’s second touchdown during the fourth quarter. The Warriors had 330 yards of offense.

Before kickoff, the band from the University of Alabama performed. The Crimson Tide plays USC at AT&T Stadium on Saturday.
