Cedar Hill overwhelmed in Nevada vs. Texas showdown

Two of the top high school teams in the country opened the season Saturday night at Longhorn Stadium.

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, a 14-time Nevada state champion, including the past seven, spotted Cedar Hill a seven-point lead, but charged past the Longhorns 44-14.

Cedar Hill, No. 3 in the Associated Press Texas Class 6A state poll and No. 5 in the USA Today poll, struck first on a 27-yard scoring pass from Avery Davis to Charleston Rambo with 4:18 left in the first quarter. It was the first play after a Cedar Hill punt hit a Gaels player in the foot and was recovered by Josh Newman for the Longhorns.

Bishop Gorman, No. 3 in the latest USA Today Super 25 national poll, took over in the second quarter with a Derek Ng 24-yard field goal and touchdown runs of 54 and 2 yards by running back Biaggio Ali Walsh, grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, for a 17-7 lead.

Cedar Hill, UIL state champs in 2006, 2013 and 2014, cut the deficit to 17-14 with 5:22 left in the third quarter on a 72-yard run off a fake punt by Marquise Forman, but Ali Walsh countered with a 77-yard scoring run. Later, Gaels quarterback Tate Martell, an Ohio State commitment, added touchdown runs of 13, 34 and 49 yards.

This was the second Metroplex game on ESPN Saturday. Frisco Lone Star against Frisco Heritage at the Ford Center at The Star was the first contest.
