Aledo too much for Mansfield Legacy

Two of the top teams in the Star-Telegram Class 5A area rankings faced off at Newsom Stadium on Friday and the game lived up to the billing.

No. 1 Aledo started quickly and No. 5 Mansfield Legacy tried to catch up but just couldn’t as the Bearcats downed the Broncos 59-41.

Aledo (3-0), No. 2 in the Associated Press Class 5A state poll, scored on nine of its 11 possessions.

Legacy (2-1) was forced to punt on the game’s opening series and Aledo quarterback Dillon Davis went to work. Davis tossed touchdown passes to Logan Bridges and Hunter Rosson and the Bearcats led 14-0 with 7:39 left in the first quarter.

Rosson’s touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Aledo defensive tackle James Williams at the Legacy 26-yard line.

Legacy’s offense got going behind quarterback Kendall Catalon and running back Kameron Session, but the Broncos defense just couldn’t get a stop.

Catalon, who accounted for five Legacy scores, threw a touchdown pass to Troy Edwards from 3 yards out to cut Aledo’s lead to 21-13 with 58 seconds left in the first quarter.

But following a Quinn Davis 28-yard field goal for Aledo, Brannon Webb recovered the ensuing kickoff, setting the Bearcats up at the Legacy 37.

Five plays later Aledo running back Donnie Evans scored on a 9-yard run to give the Bearcats a 31-13 lead with 7:15 left in the half.

Legacy countered with a 14-yard scoring run by Catalon to cut the lead to 31-20, but the Broncos could get no closer than 11 points.

The Broncos finally stopped the Bearcats on downs with 4:56 left in the game, but gave the ball back on downs themselves when Aledo defensive end Michael Arlt sacked Catalon for a 21-yard loss.

Evans capped the scoring with a 6-yard TD run with 1:57 left in the game. Evans led Aledo with 124 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored on runs of 5, 9, 8 and 6 yards.

Dillon Davis finished with 209 yards passing completing 10 of 14 passes with touchdowns of 14, 15, 52, and 31 yards. The final two scoring passes were to Preston Jefferis, who finished with 150 yards receiving.

Catalon had 112 rushing yards and scoring runs of 14, 12, and 18 yards and threw for 161 more. Both of Catalon’s TD passes went to Troy Edwards, the second from 6 yards out.

Session picked up 86 yards on 18 carries and had a 39-yard touchdown run for his only score of the game.
