TCU QB Kenny Hill named preseason Big 12 newcomer of year

He hasn’t been named the starter but TCU quarterback Kenny Hill was named the newcomer of the year in the Big 12’s preseason football team.

Hill is one of four Horned Frogs named to the team, which was selected by media representatives who cover the league. He joins defensive ends Josh Carraway and James McFarland, and KaVontae Turpin, who was chosen as the return specialist.

Hill, a junior transfer from Texas A&M, started the the first eight games for the Aggies in 2014, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,649 yards and 23 touchdowns. In his first game, he passed for a school-record 511 yards against South Carolina.

Hill, who starred at Southlake Carroll, is competing for the starting job with junior Foster Sawyer, a Fort Worth All Saints grad.

Coach Gary Patterson has said the decision on a starter might not be made until just before the Horned Frogs’ season opener Sept. 3 against South Dakota State.

Carraway, a senior from Flower Mound Marcus, was a first-team all-conference selection last season, when he led TCU with nine sacks and three fumble recoveries.

McFarland, a senior from West Monroe, La., missed last season with an injury but led the team with seven sacks and three forced fumbles in 2014.

Turpin, a sophomore from Monroe, La., caught 45 passes for 649 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was a freshman All-American at kickoff returner and honorable mention all-Big 12 selection at return specialist.
