I think .... the most intriguing TCU football signee is on offense
Busy week. Finals (not for me, but my kids — that counts; who do you think stays on them to crack open a book once in a while?), bowls, a basketball game and football signings.
Have had hardly any time to think, TBH.
But every week, it's "Three Things I Think, Three Things I Know." For you, our loyal readers of the Star-Telegram.
This week is no different.
Three things I think:
1. The Frogs restocked nicely at receiver in the early signing period. They needed to, because five pair of veteran hands will be gone next year and Isaiah Graham transferred. So how does a lineup of KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Reagor, Dylan Thomas and four-star signee Tevailance Hunt sound? Now throw in seniors-to-be Jaelan Austin and Jarrison Stewart and signees Bryson Jackson and Chase Van Wagoner. Has the makings of a deep competition.
2. The prospect I'm most intrigued by is Texarkana Texas High's Tevailance Hunt. Have you seen his tape? It just looks different than everybody else's. Balls don't get past his hands. He's always open. He caught 18 touchdown passes as a senior. Hey, I know. There are great receivers everywhere. Everybody's got a good one. But some guys look and play different. I think this is one.
3. Nobody keeps this stat: How often has a school been Top 10 in football, basketball and baseball at the same time? The Frogs are close. They're Top 15 across the board this week. Have they ever done that before? Surely it's been done, but when? By who? I think that would take time to research.
Three things I know:
1. The Frogs needed a running back badly. One fell in their laps, and a four-star at that, when Fabian Franklin committed last week and signed this week. Without him, the Frogs would have gone into 2018 with Darius Anderson, Sewo Olonilua and Kenedy Snell. Anderson is a known commodity and star. Olonilua still has to prove himself to coach Gary Patterson. Snell is not a 20-carry-a-game back. Franklin fills an immediate need for talent and productivity.
2. Speaking of talent, TCU is getting better at signing the higher-rated variety. Gary Patterson and crew signed four four-star players on the first day of the early signing period, and a fifth is on the way with Justin Rogers at the end of the week. By TCU’s count, that will bring the total to 49 four-stars in the last 10 classes. Before that? Five in eight years. So in 18 years, TCU has gone from signing about one four-star every two years to about five a year — 10 times the rate.
3. The Big 12 basketball schedule was going to be no picnic for TCU. Or anybody. But good grief, have you seen the start of it for TCU? The Frogs start out with Oklahoma, at Baylor, Kansas, at Texas and at Oklahoma in their first five games. That's the conference champ. That's three roadies. That's Trae Young twice. Turn your eyes, kids. The Frogs might come out of it looking like they were in a schoolyard fight.
