One dead, one injured in helicopter crash near Sherman
A flight instructor died after a helicopter crash that also injured a student Tuesday night in Grayson County.
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Mark Tackett said the instructor and student were training at about 8:30 p.m. when they simulated engine failure at 1,100 feet. When they tried to resume power, the attempt failed and despite their efforts to steer to a safe landing, they crashed in a pasture on Bennett Road between Howe and Sherman.
Both were taken to Wilson N. Jones Hospital nearby in Sherman.
The Associated Press reported that Daniel Katen, 58, of Lewisville died Wednesday morning.
The student is the owner of the helicopter and has been identified as Matthew Cavender, 44, of Howe. The AP reported that the helicopter was a two-seat Hughes 269-C.
Fox 4 interviewed a resident who said one of the injured men knocked on his door for help.
