A church volunteer who worked with youths was in custody Tuesday, accused in a sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl while he was at Open Door Baptist Church, police said.
Police identified the suspect as Steven Winn, 33, of Crandall and believe he had an ongoing relationship with the girl for the last 14 months.
It is the second time the Mesquite church has had to deal with rape accusations. In 2011, the pastor hanged himself in a Charleston, W.Va., jail cell after his arrest on a rape charge.
In the latest case, authorities began an investigation on Feb. 18 after receiving a tip about a possible sexual assault involving a teenage girl who was a student at the church's school.
Winn was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Feb. 22 and remained there Tuesday with bail set at $375,000. He faces three charges of sexual assault of a child.
He was also being held on Kaufman County warrants accusing him of sexual assault of a child, according to jail records.
Winn was fired Feb. 20 from his job as a construction inspector in the Mesquite public works department, police said.
Open Door Baptist Church pastor Matt Jarrell died in May 2011 in a Charleston, W.Va., jail cell. Days before, Jarrell had been arrested and accused of raping a woman.
The woman told authorities that Jarrell picked her up in Charleston when she needed a ride home. Instead of taking her home, he took her to a secluded area and raped her, according to a criminal complaint.
