Cleburne man fires at officers after fatally shooting father, sheriff says
Johnson County deputies were met with gunfire after responding to a disturbance call of a man who shot his father Friday night, a Sheriff’s Department news release said.
Police received the call around 9:20 p.m. from a female that said her brother, Omar Rodriguez, 48, had shot her father, Manuel Rodriguez, 72, and was still armed in the home at 141 Harriette Circle.
The caller and her children took her father to a hospital, where he died from the gunshot wounds, police said.
Before officers arrived, Omar Rodriguez fled to a neighbor’s home and refused to leave. When deputies entered the residence, believing Rodriguez to have committed suicide, they were met with gunfire.
Officers returned fire, hitting Rodriguez in the shoulder.
One officer was taken to Walls Methodist Hospital for wounds from flying debris. He was treated and released, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Rodriguez was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was expected to recover from his wound.
Sheriff Bob Alford said in a statement that Rodriguez will be charged with the murder of his father and could face charges of attempted murder of a police officer.
