No more small recruiting classes for DFW area

I remember vividly when I said that the 2016 high school recruiting period for our area might be the most robust Northeast Tarrant County has ever seen. Well, I could be, and should be, wrong about that. And there’s a good reason. So far, this area has seen eight players give verbal commitments, and that could move well into the teens.

Arkansas pitching coach Tony Vitello came to the Houston baseball showcase in January 2015 and had other arms he wanted to evaluate. In the meantime, Kole Ramage kept throwing 90-mph-popping fastballs to his catcher. Soon the Carroll right-hander, now a senior, drew the attention of the SEC power assistant coach.

Ryan Drake’s baseball career changed course drastically in 2015. Thought to have been a potential part of Grapevine’s pitching plans for the spring, a strained ligament in the right-hander’s elbow in the fall put those plans on hold for the most part.

Carroll baseball promotes pitching coach to skipper

When Larry Vucan returned from vacation in early June, there was a voicemail waiting from him from Larry Hughes. The then-Carroll baseball coach let him know that he was retiring and that if Vucan wanted to pursue the job, there was no better time to do it. Less than four weeks later, Vucan is Carroll’s new baseball boss.
