A woman is expected to recover after being shot while her 3-year-old son sat in the back seat during an attempted carjacking Thursday, CBS 11 reported.

Police told Channel 11 that the woman was visiting a friend at the 2700 block of Roberts Circle when the man approached her at her car and demanded that she give it to him.

When the woman refused, the man fired two shots into the car, hitting her in the hip and leaving a large hole in the driver’s-side window, the station reported.

“The motherly instincts took over in protection of the child that was in the backseat,” Arlington police Sgt. Brad Norman told a TV reporter.

The man, who witnesses said was in a black hoodie with a blue bandanna over his face, fled the scene. Police searched for him using the K-9 unit but were unsuccessful.

The woman was taken to Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital and was released Friday evening, CBS 11 reported. Her son was not harmed during the incident.
