Dak Prescott among a flood of SEC draft talent entering the NFL

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott’s early success with the Dallas Cowboys conjures up thoughts of the Southeastern Conference’s dominance during the recent NFL Draft.

Prescott, a fourth-round draft pick out of Mississippi State, was one of a conference-leading 51 selections from the SEC during the three-day draft. The SEC has led all college football conferences in draft picks for 10 consecutive years.

Alabama and Florida led the league with seven draft picks each, followed by five each for Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss and Georgia. Tennessee was the only SEC team without a player drafted.

Of those 51 picks, eight went in the first round.

As for Prescott, he was one of three Mississippi State players to be taken in the draft. The others were defensive tackle Chris Jones in the second round by Kansas City and cornerback Will Redmond in the third round by San Francisco.

Prescott was one of two quarterbacks from the SEC to be drafted. The other was Brandon Allen of Arkansas, who was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round.

At least one Florida player has been selected in every NFL draft since 1952, the longest streak in SEC history. Alabama has had a first-round selection in each of the past eight drafts, the nation's longest current streak. Texas A&M has had at least one first-round selection each year since joining the SEC.
