Brice Butler gives Cowboys a deep threat option

Brice Butler likes to consider himself a do-it-all receiver. He can be used in underneath routes, intermediate routes and, of course, for the deep ball.

But it’s the deep threat that Butler can provide that is most intriguing and he showed it against the Dolphins on Friday night.Butler and Dak Prescott connected on a 58-yard pass play, a perfectly run deep post by Butler and well-timed throw by Prescott.

“The deep post that got us down in there inside the 5-yard line was a big-time play,” coach Jason Garrett said. “I thought the route was really good. There are a lot of those plays where the ball is right there, the receiver is there, and the defender is there and somehow a guy gets a hand in.

“But the protection was outstanding, Dak made a really good throw and he [Butler] did a great job finishing that play.”

Butler finished the game leading the team with 74 receiving yards on three catches, including a TD reception. He also had a TD called back because of offensive pass interference.

Garrett, though, didn’t seem to mind the penalty on Butler.

“It was an aggressive play where he really attacked the football,” Garrett said. “It’s good to see him make those kinds of plays.”

Butler’s first impression came on a deep ball last season when he hauled in a 67-yard pass against New Orleans. And he’d like to see more of those in the season.

“I was waiting on it,” Butler said after the game. “We threw some balls early in camp and then we kind of went sideline for a while. I was sitting back, just waiting for them to throw me a deep ball.

“Then it ended up happening. We saw the safeties were low. I was like, ‘Man, just throw me the ball.’ Dak threw the ball and I took care of the rest.”
