Deadline passes for Cowboys to sign long-term extension with George Pickens
The Dallas Cowboys and George Pickens have failed to come to an agreement on a long-term contract by Wednesday’s 3 p.m. deadline meaning the wide receiver will play the season on the franchise tag.
The tag will pay Pickens $27.3 million, making him the 17th highest paid player at his position in the NFL.
Pickens skipped some voluntary workouts but appeared at mandatory minicamp.
Earlier in the offseason Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones had explained the team’s decision with regard to signing Pickens long-term.
“We’ve made a decision that we’re going to have George play under the franchise tag,” Jones said. “Which won’t be a first for us. So, there won’t be negotiations on a long-term deal.”
“
Pickens is headed into his second season in Dallas after arguably his best season when he set career highs in yards (1,429), catches (93) and touchdowns (9). The Cowboys traded a 2026 third-round selection and a 2027 fifth-rounder to acquire Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers., where he spent the first three seasons of his career.
Pickens and CeeDee Lamb form of of the league’s best receiver duos. The pair will look to power the Cowboys back to the playofffs for the first time since the 2023 season.
