It was far from the dream road trip for the Dallas Cowboys to the Motor City on Thursday night, as head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s squad fell 44-30 to the Detroit Lions in a pivotal matchup toward dictating the playoff bubble in the NFC.
Aside from the result, a health concern for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also came out of the game after he suffered a concussion in the third quarter.
With 12:47 left in the frame, quarterback Dak Prescott gave Lamb a chance at a one-on-one ball in the end zone that he couldn’t come up with. As he was landing on the ground, his head slammed against the Ford Field turf. His left arm went numb as he laid on the turf without much movement for a few moments.
He was checked out by medical staff on the field and in the injury tent before being quickly ruled out and walked to the locker room. Coming out of the locker room after the loss, Lamb nodded when asked if he was OK.
“It scared me,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday morning. “It really did.”
Back in the team facility on Friday, Schottenheimer was able to see Lamb, whose body responded well less than 24 hours after the injury.
“He had a good day,” Schottenheimer said Friday afternoon on a conference call with local reporters. “But he has to go through all the checks and balances of all that stuff. I do think the extra couple of days should hopefully help him.”
The Cowboys will not have to play again until Dec. 14 when the Minnesota Vikings come into town for a “Sunday Night Football” matchup. Heading into a 10-day break, the extra rest should help Lamb power through the league’s concussion protocol, although his availability won’t be clear until late next week.
It was a productive night for Lamb, as he hauled in six receptions for 121 yards before exiting the game. The offense suffered some lulls in his absence, but second-year wide receiver Ryan Flournoy was able to pick up the production vacated by Lamb in the second half by finishing with 115 yards and one touchdown on nine receptions.
The loss dropped the Cowboys to 6-6-1 on the season. And while the playoff odds sit at just 9 percent, according to ESPN analytics, following the loss, winning the remaining four games on the schedule would bolster the odds to 51 percent.
So, for a Cowboys team that still has postseason wishes to play for, getting Lamb back in time for the clash against the Vikings could be big in determining their success in the month of December.
