Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb suffers high ankle sprain, expected to miss multiple games

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears, team executive vice president Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Monday.

Even though Lamb said after the game that he “absolutely” feels like he can play through the injury, the Cowboys are preparing for a multiweek absence for their star receiver, according to two team sources.

The decision on when he returns will ultimately fall into the hands of the team’s medical personnel to hold him back from playing until he’s fully healthy.

“We’ve got to evaluate the full thing, see how he’s moving around as the day goes,” Jones said. “Certainly, he’s got a high ankle sprain, and every one of those are different.”

Lamb suffered the injury on a first-quarter carry out of the backfield — his first of the season. While being brought to the ground by Chicago Bears linebacker Noah Sewell, Lamb’s left ankle got wrapped under Sewell’s leg and bent sideways.

Lamb lost a yard on the play, but it did not count because of offsetting penalties.

After being tended to on the sideline, Lamb attempted to go back into the game in the second quarter, but he lasted just one play before limping back off. He did not return.

For his career, Lamb has 57 rushes for 388 yards and three touchdowns. Most of those came on reverses or other wide runs. Sunday’s negated carry was his 10th “inside run,” according to NFL Pro.

With a dangerous opponent looming Sunday night in the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys are planning to be without Lamb.

“We’d love to have him back for Green Bay,” Jones said. “But we also have to understand the injury is what it is and we’ll play it out.”

While he was not wearing any protective gear immediately after the game, Lamb was seen in the team facility on Monday with a boot on his left foot and a walking scooter.

If he were to miss an extended period of time, it would be just the second stretch of Lamb’s six-year career that injury kept him off the field. In 2024, a nagging shoulder injury reached its limit late in the season when Lamb was put on injured reserve and missed the final two games.

Through three weeks, Lamb has 16 receptions for a team-high 222 yards.
