Cowboys make more moves after cuts, add 2 young cornerbacks
The Dallas Cowboys made eight transactions Wednesday, including claiming cornerbacks Reddy Steward and Trikweze Bridges off the NFL waiver wire following roster cutdown day Tuesday across the league.
To make room for those two players, the Cowboys waived cornerbacks Andrew Booth and Zion Childress. Booth is in his second year with the team after being acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. Childress was an undrafted free agent this year who shined bright in training camp as a potential option in the slot.
They will have to clear 24-hour waivers, but are expected to return to the practice squad if no other team claims their services.
Steward, a 2024 undrafted signee of the Chicago Bears, had a strong training camp with the Vikings but was waived Tuesday. The Cowboys’ claim came through, and he will reunite with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who was his head coach in 2024 in Chicago. He has played in one career game and forced a fumble from Arizona Cardinals standout wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Bridges, a seventh-round pick this year by the Los Angeles Chargers, failed to make the roster on Jim Harbaugh’s squad but will potentially get the opportunity to play in his first career regular-season game in Dallas. A Florida product, Bridges transferred to Gainesville after three seasons at Oregon, where he played under current Cowboys wide receivers coach Junior Adams.
The roster moves didn’t stop there for the Cowboys.
They placed running back Phil Mafah (shoulder) and cornerback Caelen Carson (knee) on the injured reserve/designate to return list, knocking them out for at least the first four weeks of the season. In their place, Dallas signed longtime special teams ace C.J. Goodwin and veteran offensive tackle Hakeem Adeniji to the active roster.
It is expected that these transactions will be the final ones before the team begins its preparation for the season opener. The team is taking the NFL-required three consecutive days off and will return to the facility Friday for the first of four practices leading into the Week 1 road matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.
