Cowboys hot routes: Talkin’ golf with Brandon Weeden
If he’s not focused on his football craft, Brandon Weeden can be found honing his golf game. The Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback is an avid golfer who makes his home off Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla.
Weeden, 31, was among the celebrities to play in the American Century Championship last month in Lake Tahoe, although he had a forgettable few rounds.
Regardless, Weeden is always willing to talk golf and went through five of his favorite courses.
1 Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. “It doesn’t have the views of a lot of courses, but it’s just a good golf course. You’ve got to hit good golf shots and you can’t be out of position. It might not be the longest course, but you have to keep it in play. Just a real fun course to play.”
2 San Francisco Golf Club. “I teed off about 7:45 a.m. when it was still dewy and foggy. I couldn’t see my tee ball, but I knew I hit it well, and my caddie, who had been there for 30 years, said, ‘Perfect shot.’ I made a par on the first hole and played well all day there.”
3 Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. “This is the home course of Oklahoma State and it’s a great course. To me, Oak Tree and Karsten Creek are two of the best golf courses there are.”
4 Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. “I had the full-on flu but went out and shot 77. For having never played the golf course and having the flu, I’ll take it. And every hole you could literally stop and take a picture. It’s just perfect. What’s also cool about the course is it’s the desert and they dug it out of the ground. It’s a really good golf course.”
5 Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. “I played it right after the renovation [in 2011]. The greens weren’t real fast, but it was a really good golf course and a lot of fun to play. You don’t lose a ton of golf balls. I love that style of golf because you can hit it right or left and the trees just catch the golf ball.”
No discrimination
Chris Jones is in the minority being a left-footed punter, which the Cowboys feel is a benefit. Returners don’t see the ball spin in that direction on a daily basis.
But coach Jason Garrett made it clear that the team doesn’t only like Jones because he’s left-footed.
“The reason we like Chris Jones is Chris Jones is a really good punter, but being a left-footed punter is a bonus,” Garrett said. “We don’t say we don’t like right-footed punters, but it is a nice bonus with a guy like that who is a dang good punter.”
Star watch
Hollywood star Denzel Washington was among those on hand to watch the Cowboys’ Saturday practice. Washington has done several sports movies, including Remember the Titans. The Cowboys posted a picture of Washington with Jason Witten and Tony Romo on Twitter.
