JUST CHILL: 10 thoughts from Saturday’s practice

1. Actor Denzel Washington was the talk of practice on Saturday. He was a long-time Cowboys fan and even dropped the name Walt Garrison.

2. Linebacker Sean Lee worked in team drills for first time, which was another step towards the Cowboys setting him free with no limitations. He did not do any goal line work.

3. Dan Bailey is human after all. He missed a 41-yard field goal, but good from 33, 43, 44, 47 and 53.

4. The second fight of training camp came when fullback Tyler Clutts and linebacker Kyle Wilber got into after a play. Clutts took exception to the way Wilber threw running back Joseph Randle to the ground after a long run in a short-yardage drill.

5. Tensions were high on defense all day as they were dominated by the offense in goal line and short yardage drills. The offense scored four straight times in goal line. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli was not happy, erupting in a cursing tirade.

6. Rookie running back Gus Johnson worked with the first team offense during goal line as they Cowboys wanted to keep starter Joseph Randle away from the heavy contact. Johnson, an undrafted rookie from Stephen F. Austin, showed scored twice, running over safety J.J. Wilcox at the goal line on the second one.

7. It was a mixed bag for former Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk as the goal line back against the second-team defense. He was yelled at for dancing too much on one play. He came back and scored after reversing field. The next time he hit up in there and scored on a simple running back dive.

8. Rookie defensive lineman Ryan Russell is getting showing up more and more, especially when they use him as an under tackle. He won a couple of battles in the pass rush drill. Russell was a defensive end in college.

9. Wide receiver Cole Beasley’s toughness is often overlooked but it shouldn’t be underestimated. He proved that in a compete drill against cornerback Tyler Patmon. The two got locked up and Beasley grabbed Patmon and threw him to the ground. Beasley got up and finished his route, catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Tony Romo.

10. Brandon Weeden didn’t finish practice off well when it came his turn to run the 2-minute offense. There weren’t many completions and lots of balls hit the ground.
