Could Mike McCarthy be back for the Dallas Cowboys in 2025? Here’s what Jerry Jones says

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been part of a roller coaster season that has featured more downs than ups through 12 weeks. With his team sitting at 4-7 in the final season of his five-year contract, the assumption has been that the team will move on from his services in the offseason.

However, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said on his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning that it would not be crazy to rule out a potential contract extension for McCarthy.

“I don’t think that’s crazy at all,” Jones said “It’s not crazy. Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. … This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that.”

McCarthy has had three 12-5 seasons sandwiched between injury-ridden 2020 and 2024 campaigns. The biggest knock on his tenure has been a 1-3 record in the postseason, including one of the most disappointing losses in franchise history, a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 wild card.

However, in his first year as the offensive playcaller in 2023, the Cowboys were the NFL leader in points scored and quarterback Dak Prescott finished second in MVP voting. In 2024, the offense has regressed with two rookies on the offensive line and a season-ending injury to Prescott.

“[McCarthy] has great ideas,” Jones said. “In no place in my body language or anything else have you seen indications to what we’re going to be doing with this staff at the end of this year. We got a lot of football left.”

After an upset win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday in which the Cowboys were double-digit underdogs, Dallas will see the luxury of four consecutive opponents under .500. It begins with a Thanksgiving matchup against the 2-9 New York Giants before clashes with the 4-7 Cincinnati Bengals, 3-8 Carolina Panthers and 5-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Cowboys have just a 5% chance of making the playoffs after Sunday’s win.
