Cowboys QB Dak Prescott to have season-ending hamstring surgery on Wednesday

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will have season-ending surgery on his torn hamstring on Wednesday in New York, as a final medical opinion confirmed the necessity for the operation.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed the news on Tuesday morning on his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan.

“His prognosis is wonderful,” Jones said. “It just means we’re not going to have him for the rest of the year.”

Prescott suffered a partial avulsion of his hamstring in the third quarter of the loss against the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 3. He and the team have gone through the process of seeking multiple outside opinions on the injury over the last week, and the evaluation has concluded that he will need season-ending surgery. He is expected to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days to free up a roster spot.

The recovery period is expected to last four months, clearing him in time for the beginning of the offseason organized team activities in May.

It had been a rocky first half of the year for Prescott, as he had thrown for 1,978 yards along with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions before suffering the injury.

The Cowboys will turn to Cooper Rush and Trey Lance for the remainder of the 2024 season. Jones’ confidence remains high in Rush despite a horrid performance against the Eagles in Sunday’s 34-6 loss. Rush thew for jsut 45 yards before Lance relieved him late in the game.

“Cooper has shown that he has the capability to compete and win games,” Jones said. “And he does give us our best chance. Frankly, that was really an out of character game for him based on what we’ve seen.”

The team is finalizing adding quarterback Will Grier to the practice squad for additional depth. Arriving in Dallas for his second stint with the team, Grier was the third-string quarterback from 2021 to 2023 before being released when the team traded for Trey Lance.

Wednesday’s surgery will be the fourth operation that Prescott has had since arriving in Dallas in 2016. In 2020, he needed surgery on a dislocated right ankle that sidelined him for 11 games. He has since had operations on his right thumb and left shoulder.

Hours before the 2024 season began, Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the team that will keep him with the team through 2028. Next season will mark the official beginning of that extension.
