Former Dallas Cowboys legend nominated for Don Shula High School Coach of the Year
Jason Witten, who led Argyle Liberty Christian to an undefeated season that ended with a TAPPS Division II state championship victory, is being recognized for his coaching prowess.
Witten was nominated for the NFL’s Don Shula High School Coach of the Year which was announced on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.
Each year 32 nominees are chosen by the 32 NFL teams and judged by character, leadership, dedication the community, integrity and on-the-field success. Two winners will be chosen this year from the AFC and NFC nominees.
The winner will be announced in the week before the Pro Bowl. The winners will receive a $15,000 cash award to their high school football teams alongside a $10,000 cash award.
Witten starred at tight end for the Dallas Cowboys for 16 years and holds the franchise records for both receptions and receiving yards.
Witten retired after the 2020 NFL season and shortly thereafter became the head coach of Argyle Liberty Christian.
Witten’s title with Argyle Liberty Christian was the first of his football career including high school, college and the NFL.
Witten spurned offers from the NFL and major college football programs to coach at Argyle Christian. Witten coaches with two of his sons, C.J. and Cooper, who were on the team during this season’s historic run.
Witten’s Warriors have improved greatly since his first season in 2021, when the team wn two games and suffered and eight game losing streak. After winning 10 games in the 2022 season, Liberty Christian outscored its opponents 664 to 86 in the perfect season.
