Cowboys legend Jason Witten set to coach Argyle Liberty Christian in state championship
Cowboys legend Jason Witten is thriving in his third year as the head coach of Argyle Liberty Christian.
Witten’s Warriors have reached the pinnacle of Texas high school football. Liberty Christian (13-0) is set to compete in the TAPPS D2 State Championship against the Austin Regents (12-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Waco ISD Stadium.
The team has seen rapid improvement since Witten’s first season in 2021, when the team won two total games and lost eight straight. In 2022, Liberty Christian won 10 games, eventually falling to Fort Worth All Saints in the playoffs.
This season has been a drastically different story. The Warriors defeated Fort Worth All Saints twice, 42-23 and 15-17, en route to the state title game.
The undefeated Liberty Christian Warriors haven’t just won all their games. They have dominated, outscoring opponents 664 to 86.
Prior to the Warriors’ undefeated run in 2023, Witten said “We can’t write a chapter in the book until we know the alphabet.” After two years of learning and improvement, the Warriors are firing on all cylinders ahead of the teams’ state championship appearance.
Witten’s approach to coaching is straightforward. He urges his players to put in the work and fight through adversity in order to improve. Throughout the season, the team has utilized a mantra: Be one.
If the Warriors get the job done on Friday, Witten will taste championship gold for the first time. The 11 time pro bowler has 13,046 career receiving yards in the NFL, but has not yet won a championship at the high school, college or professional level.
Liberty Christian has its work cut out for them with the Austin Regents, a team that has won 10 straights since a Sept. 15, 2023 loss to St. Thomas Catholic.
Warriors to watch
Jason Witten’s son, junior linebacker CJ Witten, has been a staple of a fierce Warrior defense and leads the team with 75 total tackles, 4 fumble recoveries and 5 sacks. CJ Witten’s younger brother, freshman Cooper Witten, is also a contributor on the squad.
Quarterback Cole Welliver, a UConn commit, is leading the offense with 47 total passing touchdowns while completing 70% of his passes. The 6-foot-6, 200 pound senior, a transfer from Flower Mound Marcus, has been a big factor in the Warriors’ success.
Another star is two way player Brady Jusinek, a junior who leads the team with 76.3 receiving yards per game. Jusinek, an Oklahoma baseball commit, is also a cornerstone of the defense, tallying a team high four interceptions.
Wide receiver Quinton Brown, a speedy junior, is a threat to score with a team high 17 receiving touchdowns this season. Running back Chase Garnett, also a junior, leads the ground attack with 26 rushing touchdowns and 119.8 rushing yards per game.
