Dallas Cowboys sacks king DeMarcus Ware named finalist for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware is one step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The team’s all-time leader in sacks and nine-time Pro Bowler was named one of 15 finalists for the Class of 2022.

Ware was one of seven first-time eligible players in this year’s class.

The 2022 class of inductees will be announced on Feb. 10 during “NFL Honors,” the prime-time awards show when The Associated Press reveals its individual award winners for the 2021 NFL season, including Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year.

Ware is almost a lock to be among this year’s honorees.

Ware played nine years with the Cowboys after being picked 11th overall in 2005. He played his final three seasons with the Denver Broncos and won Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season.

He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 2000s and was a seven-time All-Pro (including four first-team nominations) and nine-time Pro Bowler. He twice led the league in sacks (2008, 2010).

He is one of 11 players with at least 20 sacks in a season. He had seven straight seasons of 11 sacks or more.

Ware had 35 forced fumbles, 25 pass deflections, 171 tackles for loss and one touchdown in his 12-year career.

He finished his career ninth in all-time in sacks with 138.5, including 117 with the Cowboys.

He retired after the 2016 season and is now en route to becoming the 21st Hall of Famer in Cowboys’ franchise history.
