How Stephen Jones views Mike McCarthy’s coaching style after Dallas Cowboys’ 1-1 start
Mike McCarthy escaped starting 0-2 in his tenure as Dallas Cowboys head coach. And he needed an improbable onside kick recovery and a historic comeback on Sunday to pull it off.
Otherwise, McCarthy’s first two games at the helm have been filled with failed fourth down attempts, missed fake punts and fumbles.
Cowboys fans who clamored for something different than the conservative style Jason Garrett typically coached with might be wondering if there’s a middle ground.
Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones remains comfortable with McCarthy’s play-calling after two games. The Cowboys (1-1) play the Seattle Seahawks (2-0) at CenturyLink Field at 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
“I think everybody has a different coaching style. I can tell you this: Coach McCarthy is very well founded with analytics and percentages with how he looks at how he goes about managing a game, when to do something, when not to do something,” Jones said on KRLD/105.3 FM “The Fan” a day after the Cowboys rallied for a 40-39 win against the Atlanta Falcons.
“I feel very comfortable that he’s going to put us a in a position to win football games. And I think this day and time you have to be aggressive to win games, and I know the first couple of games some of the decisions haven’t gone our way in terms of whether it’s execution or whatever.”
Jones thinks over the course of a season McCarthy’s aggressive style will equate to more wins than not.
“In the long haul and when you look back at it you’re going to look back and say, ‘Hey, those things went more our way than didn’t go our way,’” he said. “I just feel so comfortable that Mike’s always going to put us in the best position to win the football game.”
