Dallas Cowboys

Social media reacts: How does Mahomes’ 10-year deal impact Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott?

The Dallas Cowboys have stated that reaching a long-term contract extension with quarterback Dak Prescott has ranked as a “top priority” for months. But no deal has been completed yet.

Asked at the Senior Bowl in January how urgent signing Prescott was with a potential extension on the horizon for quarterbacks such as reigning Super Bowl MVP and Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told the Star-Telegram: “It’s been urgent for us. We certainly want to get that done.

“That’s our No. 1 priority as we go into the off-season is to get his contract … hopefully find some resolution to it and get that done.”

Well, the Cowboys and Prescott haven’t been able to get it done. Instead, both saw the Chiefs and Mahomes reach a record-setting contract extension on Monday.

Mahomes’ new contract, according to his agents at Steinberg Sports, is worth up to $503 million over 10 years. That, coupled with two years remaining on his current contract, locks Mahomes to the Chiefs through the 2031 season. It is the richest deal not only in NFL history, but in sports history, surpassing the 12-year, $426.5 million deal the Los Angeles Angels handed Mike Trout last year.

All of it has the social media world buzzing, including what impact it will have on Prescott’s contract status. As of now, Prescott is playing the 2020 season under the franchise tag worth $31.4 million. Prescott and the Cowboys have until July 15 to reach a long-term extension, or Prescott will play next season under the franchise tag.

Prescott has gone 40-24 in his four seasons with the Cowboys, leading the franchise to two NFC East championships in 2016 and 2018. He is coming off his best season in 2019, throwing for 4,902 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
