Brother of Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has died, family member says

Jace Prescott, the older brother of Dak Prescott, has died, according to a family member.

He died early Thursday morning, a Northwestern (La.) State athletic department spokesman told the Shreveport Times. Jace Prescott played football at Northwestern State from 2007-09 before an injury ended his career.

Prescott died at his home in Orange, Texas. His girlfriend was at home at the time, according to his uncle, Phillip Ebarb of Orange.

“It’s the worst day of my life, all of our lives,” said Ebarb. “We’re all freaking devastated.”

Jace Prescott was holding his mother Peggy Prescott when she died from cancer in November 2013, Ebarb said.

He would have turned 32 on May 10.

After releasing a statement earlier in the evening, the Dallas Cowboys reacted to the death of Prescott’s brother following the NFL draft late Thursday night.

“We are so saddened that Dak has lost his brother,” owner Jerry Jones said. “We want to help him get through this period of time to avail himself in any way possible. Any of the Cowboys, or assets or the comfort of his friends and teammates around him. So whatever we can do to help him get through this horrible time. When you’re young — and Dak is young; his brother is young — death is really, really hard to understand or just think about or live with. So I have a particular sensitivity when our players or someone has a tragedy. That’s when you forget all the hard stuff and when you just want to grab and hold.”

Said vice president Stephen Jones: “I think Jerry said it as good as you can say it. Obviously, our prayers are with him and his family. Certainly, you know what Dak means to us and our organization and how much we’re with him right now.”

Said coach Mike McCarthy: “I just want to echo what both Jerry and Stephen said. It’s an unbearable time right now and I know all the prayers and thoughts go out to Dak and his family, and [we] just [ask] for everybody to respect his privacy.”
