Jason Garrett interviews with New York Giants; Dallas Cowboys add two more coaches

The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff under new head coach Mike McCarthy is nearly complete as sources have confirmed that running backs coach Skip Peete and tight ends coach Lunda Wells have joined the team.

Meanwhile, McCarthy’s successor Jason Garrett could be working for a division rival next season.

ESPN has reported that Garrett has interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the New York Giants on Wednesday. Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys officially expired on Tuesday.

Garrett had said he wanted to continue coaching before last season’s disappointing campaign came to a close. The 2019 Cowboys were built for a Super Bowl run, but they only went 8-8, Garrett’s fourth such finish in 9½ seasons as coach.

The Giants had asked for permission to interview Garrett for their head coaching job, but that was before they hired Joe Judge.

Now, Garrett may re-join a Giants organization where he served as backup quarterback from 2000-2003. He was the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys from 2007-2010 before being promoted to head coach.

Peete, who had been with the Cowboys from 2007-2012, was let go and replaced by Gary Brown. Now, he’s back as Brown’s replacement. Peete was with the Chicago Bears in 2013 and 2014, and he had worked with Todd Gurley and the Los Angeles Rams over the last three seasons.

Wells had been with the Giants for the last seven seasons, the last two as tight ends coach and the previous five as an assistant offensive line coach.

The official announcement of Peete and Wells is expected soon. McCarthy’s staff already includes offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier, offensive line coach Joe Philbin, defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, secondary coach Maurice Linguist, special teams coordinator John Fassel, linebackers coach Scott McCurley and assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko.

The Cowboys still need to add a receivers coach and strength coach.
