Dallas Cowboys’ Leighton Vander Esch undergoes neck surgery, should be ready for camp

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch underwent surgery to repair a nerve issue in his neck on Tuesday, according to sources.

The Cowboys believe he will be ready to go for the start of the offseason program in April and fully cleared well before the start of training camp in July.

Vander Esch missed the final seven games of the 2019 season due to the neck injury, a condition involving the narrowing of the spinal canal. That is what forced Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin to retire.

The Cowboys have fit him with special equipment that will prevent his head from going backward or forward.

Vander Esch was a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2018 but struggled at times in 2019, even before injury.

He recorded 72 tackles in nine games.
